A study led by kinesiology and nutrition professor Krista Varady at UIC has found that time-restricted eating may be a safe and effective method for adults with type 1 diabetes to manage their blood sugar levels. The research, published in the journal
Diabetes Care, is the first to examine the effects of intermittent fasting on individuals with type 1 diabetes. The study involved 32 participants from the Chicago area, all of whom had type 1 diabetes and were classified as obese. They were randomly assigned to one of three groups for six months: a time-restricted eating group (eating only between noon and 8 p.m. without calorie counting), a calorie-reduction group (25% calorie reduction), or a control group with no behavioral changes. After six months, the time-restricted eating group showed a significant reduction in blood sugar levels, with an average decrease of about 0.5 percentage points in their HbA1c blood test, compared to the calorie-counting group. Importantly, time-restricted eating did not increase the risk of extreme high or low blood sugar levels or diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition.
