after suffering from severe symptoms in 2021. The virus, carried by the lone star tick, has been expanding its range due to warmer winters and increased deer populations. Despite the virus's presence, no standard clinical laboratory in the U.S. can test for it, leading to underdiagnosis and untreated cases. The virus was first identified in Kansas in 2014, and only a handful of cases have been confirmed in the U.S. since then.
