What's Happening?
The SAMP/T NG surface-to-air missile defense system is being developed through a collaboration between France and Italy, aiming to replace the current SAMP/T systems in their armed forces. The system, designed by eurosam, a joint venture between MBDA
France, MBDA Italy, and Thales, is set to enter service in 2026. It offers improved range, altitude performance, and anti-tactical ballistic missile capabilities. The development began in March 2021, with preliminary design reviews completed in 2022. The Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) finalized a contract in January 2023 to initiate global production. France and Italy have formalized contracts for serial production, with France ordering seven sections for its Air and Space Force. The system features advanced radar technology and can detect threats at ranges exceeding 350km, engaging them at distances greater than 150km.
