A resident of Severn, Maryland, Nadine O'Drain, identified a phone scam when a caller claiming to be from the Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office mispronounced local place names. The caller alleged that O'Drain had missed jury duty and faced fines totaling
$9,000. O'Drain, suspicious of the caller's inaccuracies, questioned the legitimacy of the claims, leading the caller to end the call abruptly. The Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office has reported receiving multiple calls about this scam, advising residents to hang up and not share personal information. The Maryland Courts and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have reiterated that they do not demand payment over the phone for missed jury duty.
