Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito has been awarded the Green Airport Recognition 2025 by Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC). The award acknowledges
the airport's pioneering 'Laboratorio Natural UIO' project, which has transformed 150 hectares of airport land into a wildlife sanctuary. This initiative integrates biodiversity with aviation operations, demonstrating that ecological restoration and air safety can coexist. Over the past decade, the airport has restored 72 hectares of Andean dry forest, capturing approximately 400 tons of CO2 annually and supporting over 100 species, including endemic and threatened animals. The project also offers operational benefits, such as natural rodent control by raptors, and has rehabilitated and released over 160 rescued wild animals.
