Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a bioengineered chewing gum that could reduce the risk of mouth and throat cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma, which is linked to HPV and certain bacteria. The gum, made from lablab
beans, contains an antiviral protein that significantly reduces HPV and harmful bacteria levels in the mouth. The addition of protegrin, an antimicrobial peptide, further enhances its effectiveness without affecting beneficial oral bacteria. This innovation could serve as an adjunct therapy or preventive measure alongside existing treatments.
