What's Happening?
MyGov, the Government of India’s citizen-engagement platform, has initiated the 'My Culture My Story Contest 2026'. This contest invites Indian citizens to discover and document authentic cultural stories from their communities, hometowns, villages, districts,
states, or personal heritage. The initiative aims to create a digital collection titled '100 Stories. 100 Places. 100 Voices.' to showcase India's cultural diversity through the perspectives of its citizens. Participants can submit stories in various formats, including short videos, illustrated stories, digital storytelling, short documentary-style videos, or creative visual narratives. The contest is open to all Indian citizens, with no age limit, educational qualification, or professional experience requirements, and no entry fee. Submissions can be made under themes such as Traditional Art or Craft, Folk Song, Dance or Music, Festival or Tradition, Historical or Heritage Site, Local Cultural Personality, Traditional Practice, Language or Dialect, or Lesser-known Cultural Story. The submission deadline is November 15, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important as it leverages citizen participation to preserve and promote India's rich and diverse cultural heritage. By encouraging individuals to document local traditions, art forms, music, languages, festivals, and everyday practices, MyGov is fostering a sense of cultural ownership and pride among its citizens. The creation of a digital collection will provide a valuable resource for understanding and appreciating the multifaceted cultural landscape of India. This project can help in the identification and recognition of lesser-known cultural elements, ensuring their longevity and visibility. Furthermore, the contest incentivizes participation with rewards, including Digi Haat Coupons and wider digital visibility for selected stories, which can motivate more people to engage in cultural preservation efforts. The focus on authentic, community-level stories ensures a grassroots approach to cultural documentation, reflecting the true essence of India's heritage.
What's Next?
Following the submission deadline of November 15, 2026, entries will be evaluated based on cultural relevance and authenticity, storytelling quality, creativity, originality, research, cultural insight, presentation, and engagement. The top 100 winners will each receive a ₹500 Digi Haat Coupon, and their stories may be featured across MyGov’s digital platforms. The selected submissions will collectively form a digital showcase representing cultural diversity across various states, union territories, districts, regions, languages, arts, folk traditions, festivals, heritage sites, and cultural personalities. The winners will be announced through the official MyGov Blog. This initiative is expected to contribute to a growing digital archive of India's cultural heritage, potentially inspiring future projects focused on cultural documentation and preservation.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'My Culture My Story Contest' goes beyond a simple competition by fostering a deeper connection between citizens and their cultural roots. It highlights the ethical responsibility of preserving intangible cultural heritage, which often resides in oral traditions, local practices, and community memories. By encouraging diverse formats for submissions, the contest acknowledges the evolving ways in which culture is expressed and consumed in the digital age. This initiative could also serve as a model for other nations seeking to engage their populations in similar cultural preservation efforts. The emphasis on originality and authenticity in submissions underscores the importance of genuine cultural representation, while the prohibition of offensive or inappropriate content ensures a respectful and inclusive platform for cultural exchange. The long-term impact could be a more informed and culturally aware citizenry, with a strengthened appreciation for the unique traditions that define India.
