What's Happening?
The International Trade Centre (ITC) and the G20 Global Land Initiative under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) have opened applications for the 2026-27 Youth Ecopreneur Programme (YECO). This initiative aims to support young
entrepreneurs, particularly those under 35 from developing countries, who are developing green business solutions and contributing to land restoration. The program offers business training, mentorship, international exposure, networking opportunities, and access to funding. Participants will go through a Global Bootcamp and Global Accelerator, culminating in the Youth Ecopreneur Awards, where finalists can pitch their businesses for a chance to win $10,000. Additionally, eligible businesses in the Land Restoration category can access a $100,000 equity-free funding pool. The program also provides intellectual property expertise from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), pro bono legal services, business coaching, and preferential access to Google Startups for Sustainable Development.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant for fostering sustainable economic development and addressing environmental challenges globally. By empowering young ecopreneurs, it contributes to the growth of green economies and promotes innovative solutions for land restoration and environmental sustainability. The focus on developing countries helps bridge economic disparities and build local capacities for climate action. The comprehensive support, including funding, mentorship, and networking, increases the likelihood of success for these nascent businesses, which can then create jobs, drive innovation, and contribute to achieving global sustainability goals. The program's emphasis on land restoration directly tackles critical issues like desertification and ecosystem degradation, which have far-reaching impacts on food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
What's Next?
Applications for the 2026-27 Youth Ecopreneur Programme are open until November 22, 2026. Following the application period, selected entrepreneurs will embark on a structured journey through the Global Bootcamp and Global Accelerator phases. The program will culminate in the Youth Ecopreneur Awards, where finalists will present their ventures to an international audience. After the awards, participants will enter a Scale & Impact phase, providing further opportunities to strengthen their businesses, expand their networks, and increase their environmental and economic impact. The program also aims to grow its alumni community, connecting participants with a wider network of young entrepreneurs and ecosystem actors worldwide, fostering continued collaboration and support.
Beyond the Headlines
The Youth Ecopreneur Programme represents a broader global effort to integrate environmental sustainability with economic development, recognizing that young entrepreneurs are key drivers of this transition. It highlights the growing importance of 'ecopreneurship' as a viable and impactful career path, shifting perceptions of environmental work from purely conservationist to economically productive. The program also underscores the critical role of international collaborations between organizations like the ITC, UNCCD, WIPO, and private sector entities in creating robust support systems for sustainable innovation. This initiative could inspire similar programs and policies worldwide, fostering a new generation of business leaders committed to addressing pressing environmental issues through market-based solutions, thereby contributing to a more resilient and sustainable global economy.
