What's Happening?
Belgian shipowner Exmar has named two ocean-going ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers, ANTWERPEN and ARLON, in South Korea. These vessels are the first of their kind, marking a significant advancement in low-emission shipping. Built in collaboration
with HD Hyundai, each ship has a cargo capacity of about 46,000 cubic meters and features ammonia dual-fuel propulsion systems. This technology allows for up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions during navigation. The project involved partnerships with Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, WinGD, and Lloyd's Register, and included extensive testing of the propulsion systems.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of ammonia dual-fuel carriers represents a major step forward in the maritime industry's efforts to reduce carbon emissions. As global shipping accounts for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions, innovations like these are crucial for meeting international climate goals. The successful deployment of these vessels could encourage further investment in alternative fuels, potentially transforming the shipping industry and contributing to global sustainability efforts.
