What's Happening?
Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) has been nationally recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge for its nonpartisan democratic engagement action plan for the 2026 election cycle. MCCC earned the Highly Established Action Plan Seal,
scoring 28.4 out of a possible 32 points based on the Strengthening American Democracy Action Planning Guide (SADG) Rubric. This rubric assesses various areas including leadership, commitment, goals, and strategy. MCCC is one of only 233 campuses to receive this recognition for the upcoming election cycle. The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is a national nonpartisan initiative by Civic Nation, a 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to empowering colleges and universities in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. Michael Bettinger, MCCC Chief of Staff, highlighted the organization's role in providing guidance and best practices for institutionalizing civic engagement.
Why It's Important?
This recognition underscores the growing importance of nonpartisan civic engagement efforts within educational institutions across the U.S. MCCC's proactive approach to voter engagement, particularly its focus on increasing registration and participation rates among underserved communities and BIPOC students, sets a precedent for other colleges. By aiming for over 60% student voting rates and over 65% voter registration rates for the 2026 midterm election, MCCC is actively contributing to a more informed and participatory electorate. The college's commitment to hiring a dedicated employee for civic engagement initiatives and maintaining its status as a leading civically engaged institution in Pennsylvania demonstrates a long-term investment in democratic processes. Such efforts are crucial for fostering a culture of civic responsibility and ensuring that diverse voices are heard in future elections, thereby strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
What's Next?
MCCC plans to continue implementing and updating its action plan annually, focusing on its five stated goals for the 2026 midterm election. These goals include achieving specific voting and registration rate targets for all students, with a particular emphasis on increasing participation among Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) students. The college also intends to hire a dedicated staff member to develop and administer civic engagement initiatives. Furthermore, MCCC aims to maintain its leadership position in civic engagement among Pennsylvania's two-year institutions. The ongoing partnership with the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge will likely provide continued guidance and opportunities for MCCC to refine its strategies and engage with other institutions committed to similar nonpartisan efforts. This continuous improvement cycle suggests a sustained commitment to fostering student participation in democratic processes.
Beyond the Headlines
The national recognition of MCCC's nonpartisan voting engagement plan highlights a broader trend in U.S. higher education: the institutionalization of civic responsibility. This initiative moves beyond simply encouraging students to vote, embedding democratic engagement into the college's operational and strategic framework. The emphasis on nonpartisanship is critical, as it aims to educate students on the importance of participation without endorsing specific political affiliations, thereby fostering critical thinking and independent decision-making. This approach can help combat political polarization by promoting an understanding of the electoral process as a civic duty rather than a partisan battle. The long-term impact could be a generation of more engaged and informed citizens, potentially leading to a more representative and responsive democracy. It also underscores the role of educational institutions as key pillars in nurturing an active and healthy civil society.
