What's Happening?
Transgrid and Lumea are installing mobile signal boosters on electricity transmission towers along the HumeLink project in regional New South Wales. The HumeLink is a 500kV transmission line connecting Wagga Wagga, Bannaby, and Maragle, and is considered
one of the state's largest energy infrastructure projects. The installation of these boosters aims to address longstanding mobile reception blackspots, benefiting residents, businesses, motorists, tourists, and emergency services. The boosters have been installed at several locations, including Myrtleville and Chatsbury in the Upper Lachlan Shire and Wyangle in the Snowy Valleys Council area. These boosters capture mobile network signals from up to 20km away and redirect them to nearby communities within a three-kilometre radius, depending on the terrain. Early testing has shown mobile download speeds of around 30Mbps in areas that previously had no reception.
Why It's Important?
The installation of mobile signal boosters is significant as it addresses the issue of poor mobile reception in rural areas, which has been a challenge for local communities. Improved connectivity can enhance communication for emergency services, support local businesses, and improve the quality of life for residents. This initiative also highlights the importance of integrating telecommunications infrastructure with existing energy projects to maximize utility and efficiency. By improving mobile connectivity, Transgrid and Lumea are contributing to regional development and ensuring that rural areas are not left behind in the digital age.
