What's Happening?
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has ceased using its Cyber Workforce Dashboard, a tool launched in April 2023 to provide a comprehensive view of the federal cybersecurity workforce. According to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO),
OPM and five out of six other agencies reviewed have stopped utilizing the dashboard due to various limitations, including issues with communication, access, functionality, and data usage. The dashboard was intended to assist agencies in making data-driven decisions regarding their cyber workforce needs. Despite some improvements, such as assigning a 'data champion' to address communication issues and resolving access problems, the dashboard is still not meeting its intended purpose. The General Services Administration (GSA) is the only agency still using the tool, primarily for workforce planning.
Why It's Important?
The discontinuation of the Cyber Workforce Dashboard by OPM and other agencies highlights significant challenges in federal cyber workforce management. The GAO report underscores a persistent shortage of cybersecurity and IT professionals within the federal government, a critical issue given the increasing importance of cybersecurity in national security and public safety. The dashboard's failure to meet its objectives could hinder efforts to address these workforce shortages and improve cybersecurity capabilities across federal agencies. The situation calls for a reassessment of tools and strategies used for cyber workforce planning, which is crucial for maintaining robust cybersecurity defenses.
What's Next?
The GAO has recommended that OPM collect and analyze information on the dashboard's usage and solicit feedback from agencies to determine whether to continue or terminate the tool. OPM has indicated it will reevaluate the dashboard in light of a recent launch of a revised site for overall federal workforce data. This reevaluation could lead to improvements in the dashboard or the development of alternative solutions to better support federal agencies in cyber workforce planning.
