Europol has announced the successful disruption of a sophisticated cybercrime-as-a-service platform known as Operation SIMCARTEL. This operation targeted a SIM farm network that facilitated a wide range of cybercrimes, including phishing and investment
fraud. The coordinated effort involved law enforcement agencies from Austria, Estonia, Finland, and Latvia, resulting in 26 searches, the arrest of seven suspects, and the seizure of 1,200 SIM box devices containing 40,000 active SIM cards. Additionally, five servers were dismantled, and two websites advertising the service were taken over. The criminal network was linked to over 1,700 cyber fraud cases in Austria and 1,500 in Latvia, with financial losses amounting to millions of euros. The network enabled the creation of more than 49 million fake online accounts used for various fraudulent activities.
