What's Happening?
HEINEKEN, in partnership with EDP Comercial and Rondo Energy, is implementing a 100 MWh Rondo Heat Battery system at its Vialonga Brewery near Lisbon. This initiative marks one of the largest industrial-scale
heat battery installations in Europe and the first in the beverage industry. The system will utilize renewable electricity from a 7 MW on-site solar installation and long-term renewable grid supply to generate steam for brewing operations, eliminating the need for fossil fuels. EDP Comercial will manage the system under a Heat-as-a-Service model, providing low-carbon steam to HEINEKEN, while Rondo Energy supplies the heat battery technology.
Why It's Important?
This project is significant as it supports HEINEKEN's goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, reducing carbon emissions and shielding operations from energy market volatility. The initiative demonstrates the potential for scalable electrification and storage solutions in energy-intensive industries, aligning with EU goals to phase out fossil fuels. The partnership model offers a replicable blueprint for other sectors, promoting industrial decarbonization and energy security. The success of this project could accelerate the adoption of similar technologies globally, contributing to broader sustainability efforts.
What's Next?
The system is expected to be operational by April 2027. Its implementation could influence other industries to adopt similar decarbonization strategies, especially as regulatory frameworks tighten under the EU Green Deal. The project may also encourage further investment in renewable heat technologies, supporting the transition to sustainable industrial practices.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration highlights a shift from incremental efficiency improvements to systemic transformation in industrial energy use. It underscores the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainability goals and could lead to increased interest in service-based decarbonization models, reducing the need for upfront capital expenditure.
