What's Happening?
The Burlington County Library System (BCLS) provides a service called 'Borrow a Book Club,' which offers book club kits to its cardholders. These kits typically include up to 13 copies of a popular adult-level title, along with discussion questions and
other helpful materials. The service, which began in 2008 with donated books, established a dedicated budget line in 2018 to expand its collection. Initially, the collection included children's, teen, and young adult titles, but it has since evolved to focus exclusively on adult-level books, which proved more popular with book clubs. Currently, the collection boasts over 200 titles. Kits can be picked up and dropped off at any BCLS location, and the standard loan period is eight weeks. This service is not limited to traditional neighborhood book clubs but also serves retirement homes, senior centers, and other community groups, with delivery options available through the BCLS Mobile Library.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by the Burlington County Library System is important as it significantly lowers barriers to participation in book clubs, fostering community engagement and literacy. By providing multiple copies of books and discussion guides, BCLS removes the financial burden of purchasing books for each member and streamlines the organizational aspect of running a book club. This accessibility can lead to increased participation in reading groups, promoting intellectual discussion and social connection within the community. For senior citizens and residents in remote areas, the Mobile Library delivery service ensures equitable access to these resources, combating social isolation and supporting lifelong learning. The focus on adult-level titles reflects a strategic understanding of user demand, maximizing the impact of the service on its target demographic and reinforcing the library's role as a vital community hub for cultural and educational activities.
What's Next?
The Burlington County Library System will likely continue to expand its 'Borrow a Book Club' collection, adding new and diverse titles to meet evolving reader interests. Given the positive feedback and dedicated following, the service may explore further enhancements, such as online reservation systems for kits or virtual discussion resources to complement the physical materials. The library could also seek partnerships with local community organizations to promote the service more widely and reach underserved populations. Continued evaluation of popular titles and genres will inform future acquisitions, ensuring the collection remains relevant and engaging for its users. The success of this program may also inspire other library systems across the U.S. to adopt similar models, further broadening access to book club resources nationwide.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate convenience, the 'Borrow a Book Club' service highlights the evolving role of public libraries in fostering community and intellectual discourse in the digital age. In an era where individual consumption of media is prevalent, book clubs offer a crucial space for shared experience, critical thinking, and empathetic engagement with diverse perspectives. This service underscores the library's commitment to not just providing access to information, but also facilitating meaningful social interaction and intellectual growth. It subtly addresses issues of social equity by making cultural participation accessible to all, regardless of economic status or geographical location. The program also reinforces the value of physical books and face-to-face interaction in an increasingly digital world, promoting a sense of shared identity and collective learning within the community.
