New research indicates that a significant majority of diet advice shared on TikTok and Instagram is misleading or inaccurate. A study conducted by Australian researchers, published in the Journal of Technology
in Behavioral Science, analyzed 300 videos tagged with popular healthy-eating hashtags on both platforms. The findings show that over two-thirds of the nutrition and exercise information presented was deceptive. A key factor contributing to this inaccuracy is the source of the advice: approximately 78% of the videos were created by untrained influencers, while only 22% came from individuals with legitimate nutrition or fitness qualifications. Qualified creators were found to be far more likely to provide accurate information, with 45.5% of their content rated as accurate, compared to a mere 4.7% from unqualified influencers. The study also noted differences between platforms, with Instagram videos more frequently emphasizing idealized, muscular bodies and appearance-focused messaging, while TikTok content often framed eating around general wellness.
