What's Happening?
Director Agriculture Kashmir, Sartaj Ahmad Shah, conducted an on-site assessment of the damage caused by severe gusty winds at the Floriculture Development Scheme, kitchen garden, and entomology sections in Lalmandi, Srinagar. The winds, part of a larger
weather disturbance across the Kashmir Valley, resulted in the uprooting of plants, damage to poly-houses, and disruption of cultivation activities. Accompanied by senior officers and technical staff, the Director reviewed the extent of the damage to flower crops, seedlings, and departmental infrastructure. He issued directives for immediate remedial measures to prevent further damage and emphasized the need for timely restoration of affected facilities. The Director also instructed field staff to ensure the early revival of cultivation activities while closely monitoring weather advisories.
Why It's Important?
The assessment and subsequent actions by the Director of Agriculture are crucial for mitigating the impact of the severe weather on agricultural activities in the region. The damage to crops and infrastructure could have significant economic implications for local farmers and the agricultural sector in Kashmir. By prioritizing immediate restoration and preventive measures, the department aims to minimize losses and ensure the continuity of agricultural operations. This response highlights the importance of effective disaster management and preparedness in safeguarding agricultural productivity and livelihoods in the face of adverse weather conditions.
What's Next?
The Agriculture Department is expected to implement the Director's directives promptly, focusing on restoring damaged facilities and resuming cultivation activities. Continuous monitoring of weather conditions will be essential to prevent further disruptions. The department may also consider developing long-term strategies to enhance the resilience of agricultural infrastructure against similar weather events in the future. Stakeholders, including local farmers and agricultural workers, will likely be involved in the recovery process to ensure a coordinated and effective response.
