What's Happening?
Tau Leolo, a BSc Agriculture graduate from Moletlane village in Limpopo, South Africa, has transformed a gift of four pregnant pigs into a successful agricultural enterprise. Leolo, who operates on 7 hectares of communal land, has expanded his piggery
to 30 sows, with plans to reach 50. His journey began in 2017 when he received the pigs from a cousin, which led to the establishment of Leolo Holdings (Pty) Ltd. Through strategic growth and participation in the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation Mentorship Programme, Leolo has been able to scale his operations and secure market opportunities.
Why It's Important?
Leolo's story highlights the potential for agricultural entrepreneurship to drive economic growth and employment in rural areas. By leveraging mentorship and strategic partnerships, Leolo has been able to overcome market challenges and expand his business sustainably. His success demonstrates the importance of support systems for smallholder farmers and the role of innovation in feed management to reduce costs and increase market flexibility. Leolo's enterprise not only contributes to local food production but also provides employment and training opportunities for youth in the community.
What's Next?
Leolo plans to further expand his piggery to 100 sows to meet increasing market demand. He has applied for a feed mill to enhance production and is considering establishing an abattoir and deboning facility. These developments are expected to support his goal of securing consistent market access and scaling his operations. Leolo's vision includes creating opportunities for agricultural graduates and utilizing fallow land to boost food security and employment in the region.
