What's Happening?
A new documentary titled 'After the Tide' is shedding light on the challenges faced by residents living near the eroding cliffs of Happisburgh on the north Norfolk coast. Filmmaker Joseph Harrington began
the project in December 2021, inspired by the stark reality of homes at risk due to coastal erosion. The film follows three main characters who have either lost or are at risk of losing their homes. Harrington, who grew up visiting Norfolk's beaches, was shocked by the extent of the erosion and the lack of awareness about it. The documentary, which will be available on Disney+ next year, also features Dr. Sophie Day from the University of East Anglia, who works on preparing communities for coastal change. The film explores the historical and ongoing issue of coastal erosion, exacerbated by climate change, and debates the effectiveness of sea defenses.
Why It's Important?
The documentary brings attention to the pressing issue of coastal erosion, which poses a significant threat to communities living near vulnerable coastlines. As climate change accelerates, the frequency and severity of such environmental challenges are expected to increase, impacting property values, local economies, and community safety. The film aims to raise awareness and prompt discussions on sustainable solutions and policy interventions to protect affected areas. By highlighting personal stories, it underscores the human impact of environmental changes, potentially influencing public opinion and policy decisions regarding coastal management and climate adaptation strategies.
