What's Happening?
The City of Bozeman's Floodplain Administrator has received a floodplain development permit application from Hyalite Engineers, PLLC, representing Landern West, LCC. The application pertains to a proposed underground utility crossing at 705 South Church
Street. This project involves installing a utility bore-and-sleeve crossing beneath the FEMA-mapped Special Flood Hazard Area of Bozeman Creek. The bore-and-sleeve will carry two private sanitary sewer service lines for future townhomes on the east side of Bozeman Creek, connecting to a public sanitary sewer main on the west side. The installation will use directional boring, with the bore path passing under the floodplain, floodway, and channel of Bozeman Creek. The project is designed to comply with the City of Bozeman's floodplain regulations, ensuring that no soil or fill material is placed within the floodplain or waterbody. Erosion control measures will be implemented to protect Bozeman Creek during construction.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it addresses infrastructure needs while adhering to environmental and safety regulations. The project ensures that future townhomes have necessary sanitary sewer connections without compromising the floodplain's integrity. By using directional boring and maintaining a minimum depth of 6.5 feet, the project minimizes environmental impact and adheres to safety standards. This approach reflects a balance between urban development and environmental conservation, crucial for sustainable city planning. The project also highlights the importance of regulatory compliance in floodplain areas, which is vital for protecting communities from potential flood risks.
What's Next?
The public can review and comment on the proposed floodplain development permit application until March 23, 2026. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the City Floodplain Administrator for more details or to submit written comments. This period allows for community input and ensures transparency in the decision-making process. The feedback collected may influence final project approvals and any necessary adjustments to the plan. The City of Bozeman will continue to monitor the project to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and to address any public concerns.
