What's Happening?
Julián Castro, former housing secretary and one-time presidential hopeful, has announced a significant initiative to bolster philanthropic support for Latino communities in the United States. As the leader of the Latino Community Foundation since January
2024, Castro is spearheading efforts to establish a $250 million endowment aimed at expanding grantmaking across southwestern states. This move is in response to the ongoing challenges faced by Latino communities, including rollbacks in education, business, and immigration opportunities. The foundation, which began as a San Francisco United Way affinity group in 1989, has grown significantly but still faces a 'five-alarm fire' in terms of meeting the needs of the Latino population, which constitutes nearly 20% of the U.S. population. The foundation's current endowment of $35 million is deemed insufficient to address these needs, prompting this ambitious expansion plan.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a $250 million endowment by the Latino Community Foundation is a critical step in addressing the underfunding of Latino-led and Latino-serving organizations. Despite Latinos being one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the U.S., philanthropic support for these communities remains below 1% of all funding. This initiative aims to rectify this disparity by providing a stable source of investment for grassroots organizations that often lack access to mainstream philanthropic resources. The endowment is expected to empower Latino communities by supporting initiatives in voter registration, business access, and community empowerment, thereby ensuring that the Latino community's success is intertwined with the nation's prosperity.
What's Next?
The Latino Community Foundation plans to use the endowment to increase its annual grantmaking, with a goal of distributing at least $10 million annually. This expansion is particularly timely given the current political climate, which has seen increased enforcement policies affecting immigrant communities. The foundation's efforts will focus on holding federal immigration officers accountable and protecting families from harm. As the foundation moves forward, it will continue to advocate for Latino communities, ensuring that they have the resources and support needed to thrive in the face of ongoing challenges.
