On November 15, 2025, Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson hosted a Canal Cleanup Day at the Lake Olmstead Trailhead. This event marks the beginning of a renewed effort to maintain the cleanliness of the canal

The initiative was originally started in 2006 and has been revived following discussions between Mayor Johnson and Scott Hudson, a former senior investigative reporter and page editor at the Augusta Press. The event saw participation from various community members, including Amber Holzman and Collin Gregory from Primerose School of Augusta, who actively engaged in picking up trash along the trailhead.
