What's Happening?
Six faculty members from the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Department of Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences (EEAS) have been awarded a three-year, $1.1 million federal grant from the National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate
Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR). The project, titled 'Experiential Learning and Workforce Training in the Atmospheric, Environmental, and Disaster Sciences,' will enable NSF graduate fellows to conduct research alongside WKU faculty. This research aims to advance the holistic understanding of the Earth system and enhance resilience to physical hazards. The grant will provide financial support for seven fellows annually from 2027-2030, allowing them to enroll in EEAS graduate programs and contribute to community- and industry-responsive research while developing critical professional skills.

What's Next?
The WKU EEAS faculty and graduate fellows will immediately begin their research, focusing on areas such as dynamical interactions between atmospheric scales, historical environmental variations, water resource impacts, and the application of artificial intelligence to disaster preparedness. The grant will support seven graduate fellows annually from 2027-2030, who will enroll in WKU's Geoscience M.S. program and the new Disaster Science M.S. program. The team's efforts will complement and enhance the existing NSF EPSCoR RII – Track 1 award, CLIMBS, which focuses on enhancing resilience to physical hazards in Kentucky. The long-term vision is to establish a pipeline of WKU undergraduate students who will pursue and receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards.
