What's Happening?
Threat actors have been exploiting the OpenAI Assistants Application Programming Interface (API) to deploy a backdoor named 'SesameOp', allowing them to manage compromised devices remotely. This backdoor was discovered by Microsoft Incident Response’s
Detection and Response Team (DART) in July 2025 during a sophisticated security incident investigation. The threat actors maintained a presence within the environment for several months, using the OpenAI Assistants API for command-and-control communications between themselves and the compromised devices. The backdoor mechanism includes a loader in the form of a dynamic link library (DLL), Netapi64.dll, and a NET-based backdoor, OpenAIAgent.Netapi64, which leverages OpenAI as a C2 channel. The DLL file is heavily obfuscated and designed for stealth, persistence, and secure communication. The backdoor fetches commands using the OpenAI Assistants API, decrypts them, executes locally, and sends results back to OpenAI, using compression and encryption to remain hidden.
