What's Happening?
The National Farmers' Federation (NFF) in Australia is calling for a focus on sustainable workforce policies in agriculture, emphasizing the need for a mix of skilled and unskilled labor. In a submission
to the Value of Skilled Migration to Australia Inquiry, the NFF highlighted the importance of workforce sustainability over the origin of labor. The organization noted that while skilled migration supports specialized roles, the sector heavily relies on unskilled and semi-skilled labor. The NFF recommends prioritizing programs that support the existing workforce, such as seasonal worker programs and domestic workforce development.
Why It's Important?
The call for sustainable workforce policies in agriculture underscores the challenges faced by the sector in maintaining a stable labor supply. As agriculture is a critical industry for food security and economic stability, ensuring a reliable workforce is essential. The emphasis on unskilled and semi-skilled labor reflects the reality of agricultural operations, which require a diverse range of skills. By advocating for policies that support workforce sustainability, the NFF aims to address labor shortages and enhance the sector's resilience.
