South32, in collaboration with Eskom, is exploring future power options for its Hillside Aluminium smelter in Richards Bay, South Africa, as the current power agreement is set to expire in 2031. The smelter, which is the largest in the southern hemisphere,
requires a continuous power supply of 1,140 MW. South32 CEO Graham Kerr highlighted the ongoing studies to identify viable energy sources, including wind, solar, and backup power storage. The collaboration aims to leverage the region's renewable energy potential, such as wind and solar, while ensuring grid stability. The smelter is a significant contributor to South Africa's economy, providing jobs for over 2,300 employees and supporting an additional 27,000 indirect jobs through downstream value addition.
