What's Happening?
Major cruise companies have decided to bypass Tracy Arm, a popular fjord in southeast Alaska, following a significant landslide last summer. The landslide, which occurred on August 10, 2025, caused parts of a glacier to collapse into the water, creating
a tsunami that surged up the opposite mountain wall. Although no ships were present in the fjord at the time, and no injuries were reported, the event has raised safety concerns. As a result, cruise lines such as Holland America, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean are opting for alternative routes, specifically Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. The decision comes as the area remains unstable, with ongoing rockfalls and potential for future localized tsunamis.
Why It's Important?
The rerouting of cruise ships away from Tracy Arm has significant implications for the tourism industry in Alaska. Tracy Arm is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including tidewater glaciers and diverse wildlife, making it a major draw for tourists. The shift to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, while still offering scenic views, may not provide the same allure, potentially impacting tourist satisfaction and local businesses reliant on cruise tourism. Additionally, the decision underscores the broader challenges posed by natural hazards in the region, highlighting the need for ongoing geological assessments and safety measures to protect both visitors and the environment.
What's Next?
Cruise companies are expected to continue monitoring the situation at Tracy Arm, with potential for future adjustments based on geological assessments. Scientists are actively studying the fjord to better understand the causes of the landslide and identify other potential hazards. The first cruise ships of the season are scheduled to arrive in Ketchikan on April 21 and in Juneau the following week, with Endicott Arm serving as the primary alternative destination. Stakeholders, including travel agents and local businesses, may advocate for improved communication and contingency planning to ensure traveler satisfaction and safety.
