What's Happening?
The inaugural Terra Madre event in Azerbaijan, supported by Slow Food and national partners, celebrated the country's rich culinary heritage and biodiversity. Held in Shaki, the event emphasized the importance
of protecting traditional products and local knowledge. It brought together producers, chefs, and institutions to showcase Azerbaijan's culture and establish it as a gastronomic destination. The event took place at the Yukhari Bash National Historical-Architectural Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and featured over 30 producers displaying local foods recognized by Slow Food's Ark of Taste.
Why It's Important?
This event underscores the significance of preserving culinary traditions and biodiversity in the face of globalization. By highlighting small-scale producers and traditional practices, it advocates for sustainable food systems and cultural heritage preservation. The event also serves as a platform for educating future generations about the value of local knowledge and sustainable agriculture, which are crucial for global food security. It strengthens community ties and promotes policies that protect small-scale food systems from industrial homogenization.
