Southminster Residential Home, located near Maldon, has reported significant improvements in resident care due to regular visits from an NHS dentist. The care home manager, Liz Wynn, described the twice-yearly dental check-ups as 'game-changing,' noting
that they have eliminated the need for hospital treatments for dental issues among residents. This service, provided by the Maldon-based Carmelite practice, was part of a pilot scheme initiated in November 2023 and has since been fully commissioned until April 2030 by NHS Mid and South Essex. The initiative aims to address the dental care needs of older, frail residents, many of whom suffer from conditions like dementia that complicate their ability to manage oral health. The program has been extended to other sites, including one on Canvey Island, and has already benefited thousands of care home residents.
