What's Happening?
At the ILA Berlin Airshow 2026, MBDA Germany introduced its new Combined DefendAir Directed Energy Weapon System – Laser (DEWS-L), a ground-based counter unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) solution. This system integrates a high-energy laser and DefendAir missiles
to provide a multi-layered defense against small, fast, and low-cost unmanned aerial threats. The DEWS-L is designed to address the increasing demand for effective C-UAS solutions, offering a theoretically unlimited number of laser shots for close-in targets and 24 missiles for extended-range threats.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the DEWS-L system represents a significant advancement in anti-drone technology, addressing the growing challenge posed by unmanned aerial systems. As drones become more prevalent and sophisticated, the need for robust defense mechanisms becomes critical for national security. MBDA Germany's solution offers a cost-effective and efficient approach to countering these threats, potentially setting a new standard in C-UAS capabilities. This development could influence defense strategies and procurement decisions globally, as countries seek to enhance their aerial defense systems.
What's Next?
MBDA Germany will likely focus on further testing and refinement of the DEWS-L system, with potential interest from military and defense organizations worldwide. The system's success could lead to increased adoption of laser-based defense technologies, prompting further research and development in this field. Additionally, the introduction of such advanced systems may drive regulatory changes and international discussions on the use of directed energy weapons, impacting future defense policies and international arms agreements.
