The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) has partnered with the Fort Wayne Housing Authority to participate in the Hoosier Homes Homebuyer Assistance Program. This initiative aims to make home buying more accessible in Northwest Indiana by
offering up to 5% down payment assistance to buyers with incomes up to 140% of the area's median income. The program is funded through Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other agencies, and is administered by the Fort Wayne Housing Authority at no cost to NIRPC. Valparaiso Councilman Robert Cotton, a key advocate for this move, highlighted the changing housing market dynamics, where builders focus on high-end homes, potentially marginalizing middle-income buyers.
