What's Happening?
The Isle of Man's Mountain Road will experience daytime closures next week to facilitate the removal of road racing equipment. The infrastructure department has scheduled these closures on the northern stretch of the A18, from Ramsey hairpin to the bungalow, on Monday and Tuesday from 09:30 to 16:30 BST. This action follows the conclusion of the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT races, which ran from August 17 to 29. The removal of signs, barriers, and other equipment is necessary before major roadworks commence on September 15. These roadworks, originally planned for spring but postponed due to an asphalt plant issue, will include drainage improvements and resurfacing.
Why It's Important?
The scheduled road closures are crucial for maintaining the infrastructure and safety of the Mountain Road, which is integral to the Isle of Man's racing events. The removal of race equipment ensures that the road is prepared for upcoming major roadworks, which aim to enhance drainage and road surface quality. This development is significant for local transportation and the safety of motorists, as well as for the preservation of the road's condition for future racing events. The infrastructure improvements could also impact local businesses and tourism, as the road is a key route for visitors during racing events.
What's Next?
Following the equipment removal, the infrastructure department will begin a five-week roadwork project on September 15. This project will focus on installing culverts and resurfacing the road between Brandywell and Creg Ny Baa. Emergency access will be maintained throughout the roadworks. The department's actions may prompt reactions from local businesses and residents who rely on the Mountain Road for daily commutes and tourism activities. Stakeholders will likely monitor the progress and impact of these roadworks closely.
