What's Happening?
United Way of Marathon County is organizing a free training session aimed at equipping residents with the skills to manage volunteers during disasters. Scheduled for April 15, 2026, from 6-8 p.m. at the Marathon County Emergency Management office in Wausau,
the Volunteer Reception Center training will teach participants how to screen and process volunteers effectively. The session includes a mock disaster exercise to provide hands-on experience in managing volunteer roles during emergencies. Those who complete the training will have the opportunity to join the Marathon County Volunteer Reception Center team, which plays a crucial role in coordinating volunteer efforts during disasters. Registration is encouraged due to limited seating, and interested individuals can sign up through the United Way of Marathon County's website or by contacting Carly Hanney.
Why It's Important?
This training initiative is significant as it prepares community members to respond effectively in times of crisis, enhancing local disaster response capabilities. By equipping residents with the necessary skills to manage volunteers, the program ensures that volunteer efforts are organized and efficient, which is critical during emergencies when resources and time are limited. The training also fosters community resilience by building a network of trained individuals ready to assist in disaster situations. This proactive approach can lead to quicker recovery times and reduced impact on affected communities, ultimately benefiting public safety and well-being.
What's Next?
Following the training, participants who join the Marathon County Volunteer Reception Center team will be better prepared to assist in future disaster scenarios. The team will likely engage in regular drills and updates to maintain readiness. Additionally, the success of this training could inspire similar programs in other regions, promoting a broader culture of preparedness and volunteerism. Stakeholders such as local government agencies and non-profit organizations may collaborate further to expand the reach and impact of such initiatives.
