visits among veterans and found that female doctors tend to admit more patients to the hospital and order more lab tests and imaging than their male counterparts. Specifically, female doctors ordered about 3-5% more tests and admitted 3-5% more patients. Despite these differences, the study found that the additional tests and admissions were not wasteful, as they were equally likely to identify significant health issues. Dr. Dan Ly, the study's lead author, noted that these findings suggest female and male physicians may handle diagnostic uncertainty differently, but this does not necessarily equate to unnecessary care.
