What's Happening?
Japan's Ministry of Defense has signed four new contracts to modernize its F-15J fighter jets to the JSI (Joint Service Engineered) version, with the U.S. Air Force as a signatory to all transactions under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The
total value of these contracts is approximately $267.75 million. This upgrade program aims to enhance the combat capabilities of Japan's F-15J aircraft, bringing them closer to the F-15EX Eagle II standard. The modernization includes the procurement of upgrade equipment, communication systems, flight support equipment, and logistical support for the refurbishment process. A key component of the upgrade is the replacement of the mechanically scanned AN/APG-63(V)1 radar with the AN/APG-82(V)1, which features an active electronically scanned array (AESA) antenna. Additionally, electronic warfare systems, radar radiation warning sensors, and communication systems are being upgraded, and the combat payload capacity will be significantly increased.
