What's Happening?
The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and The Michaels Organization, joined by Rep. Maxine Waters and Assemblymember Mike Gipson, celebrated significant progress in the transformation of Jordan Downs in Watts, Los Angeles. The event
marked the grand opening of Mariposa at Jordan Downs, the fifth phase of new housing, which features a 75-unit building offering affordable and market-rate apartments, workspaces, a community room, and a Head Start early childhood education center. Additionally, officials broke ground on The Children’s Park, the third park within Jordan Downs, which will include five play areas, sensory elements, a splash pad, a junior basketball court, and gathering spaces. This revitalization project, one of the most substantial public housing efforts in the nation, has seen over $1 billion in federal, state, city, and private investment over the past decade, leading to the completion of 863 new apartments across nine communities. The redevelopment also includes new parks, community amenities, and over 120,000 square feet of retail space.
Why It's Important?
This revitalization project is crucial for addressing affordable housing and homelessness in Los Angeles, providing safe, stable, and affordable homes for families in need. The integration of a Head Start center and a new children's park directly supports early childhood education and community well-being, fostering a more vibrant and opportunity-rich neighborhood. The project's funding, sourced from various federal, state, and private entities, demonstrates a collaborative approach to urban renewal. The inclusion of Section 3 local hiring requirements and opportunities for local businesses ensures that the economic benefits of the development extend to the Watts community, promoting local employment and economic growth. This initiative serves as a model for community-centered revitalization efforts nationwide, showcasing how partnerships between government agencies, private developers, and community members can lead to significant improvements in residents' quality of life and long-term neighborhood prosperity.
What's Next?
Construction on The Children’s Park is anticipated to commence in the fall of 2026 and conclude by the end of summer 2027. HACLA and Michaels are also preparing to break ground on their sixth housing phase later this year, with infrastructure work already in progress. The ongoing revitalization efforts are expected to continue delivering new housing units, community amenities, and economic opportunities for the residents of Watts. The project will continue to prioritize local hiring and business engagement through Section 3 requirements. Further investments and partnerships are anticipated to build upon the current progress, aiming to ensure Jordan Downs remains a thriving community for future generations. The success of this project may also influence similar public housing revitalization initiatives in other urban areas across the United States.
Beyond the Headlines
The Jordan Downs revitalization project extends beyond mere construction, symbolizing a profound commitment to social equity and community empowerment. The naming of 'Mariposa' by residents, representing renewal and transformation, highlights the community-driven nature of the development and its cultural significance. The project's focus on creating 'Communities That Lift Lives' underscores a holistic approach to urban planning, integrating housing with educational resources, recreational spaces, and economic opportunities. The unveiling of three resident-inspired murals further enriches the cultural fabric of the community, celebrating growth, pride, and the shared journey of Jordan Downs families. This initiative demonstrates how comprehensive urban redevelopment can foster a sense of belonging and identity, addressing not only physical infrastructure but also the social and cultural well-being of its residents, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and equitable society.
