What's Happening?
In response to increasing threats and harassment faced by authors due to book bans, three major publishers and several literary organizations have partnered with PEN America to establish the U.S. Author Safety Program. This initiative aims to provide
authors with training, consultations, resources, and peer support to help them navigate intimidation tactics. PEN America has already raised nearly $1 million for the program, with a goal of over $2 million. The program builds on previous efforts by PEN America, Hachette Book Group, and Scholastic to support authors and journalists facing similar challenges. Key partners include Hachette Book Group, Macmillan Publishers, and Penguin Random House, with contributions from bestselling author David Baldacci and a special grant from the New York Community Trust. The program will officially launch this summer, with small group safety consultations beginning in the fall.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the U.S. Author Safety Program is significant as it addresses the growing issue of censorship and threats against authors in the United States. As book bans and legislative efforts to restrict educational content increase, authors face heightened risks to their safety and freedom of expression. This program provides a crucial support system, ensuring that authors can continue to share their stories without fear of harassment. The initiative also highlights the broader cultural and political climate in the U.S., where debates over free speech and censorship are increasingly contentious. By supporting authors, the program aims to preserve the diversity of voices and ideas in literature, which is essential for a healthy democratic society.
What's Next?
PEN America plans to hold an auction this spring featuring bestselling authors like Lee Child and Jodi Picoult, who will auction character names in their upcoming books to raise funds for the program. The program will begin outreach to the literary community this summer, with safety consultations starting in the fall. As the program develops, it will offer tailored support to authors through direct connections with the safety team and collaboration with publishers, agents, and literary organizations. The ongoing legislative efforts to ban books and restrict educational content will likely continue to influence the program's focus and resources.
