What's Happening?
George Mason University is spearheading an innovative project to create an AI-driven virtual human rights classroom prototype. Led by Professor Cher Weixia Chen, the initiative aims to provide educators, students, NGOs, government, technological, and
business leaders with tools to better approach human rights issues. The 18-month project, titled 'AI-Powered Human Rights Education for All: Toward a Better World,' involves faculty from the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) and the Costello College of Business. The platform will feature a built-in Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) toolkit, allowing users to explore interactive scenarios and receive personalized guidance on real-world dilemmas. This initiative seeks to make high-quality human rights education more accessible, personalized, and engaging, helping individuals understand how decisions in various sectors affect human rights and promoting more informed decision-making. The project began with the recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students through the Office of Creative Student Activities and Research (OSCAR).

This project is significant because it leverages artificial intelligence to democratize human rights education, making it accessible to a broader audience beyond traditional academic settings. By integrating an HRIA toolkit, the platform empowers future leaders in business, technology, and government to consider human rights as a fundamental aspect of decision-making, rather than an afterthought. Lei Gao, an associate professor of finance, emphasizes that critical decisions impacting human rights are often made in boardrooms and financial markets, through supply chains, investment choices, labor practices, and technology design. By targeting students, the project aims to instill a human rights-conscious mindset in the next generation of professionals, potentially leading to more ethical corporate practices and policies. The initiative also highlights the growing role of AI as a tool for social good, offering scalable and adaptable solutions for complex global challenges.
What's Next?
The 18-month project is currently in its development phase, with faculty from various departments collaborating on the AI-driven platform. The team plans to develop a technically robust, reliable, and culturally responsive platform that is user-friendly for both students and educators. Lei Gao will pilot the HRIA toolkit prototype with students in his finance courses, FNAN 444 Socially Responsible Finance and FNAN 483/MSF 683 Ethical and Professional Standards in Finance, to gather feedback and refine the tool. Beyond higher education, Professor Chen aspires to expand the toolkit's reach to K-12 schools and translate it into other languages. The long-term vision includes making the toolkit available to international organizations, NGOs, nonprofits, and various government and private sectors, aiming for a global impact on human rights awareness and practice.
