What's Happening?
Augusta University’s James M. Hull College of Business has partnered with United Way of the CSRA to offer free tax preparation services to eligible community members. This initiative is part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which
provides students with hands-on experience while benefiting the community. Students enrolled in the ACCT4950 – Service Learning in Tax course receive training and certification to assist with tax preparation at local United Way VITA sites. The program not only helps students gain practical skills but also addresses the shortage of volunteers for the United Way's tax assistance program. Accounting professor Sang Park emphasizes the dual benefit of the program, which enhances students' learning and provides critical tax services to families who rely on accurate tax returns for financial stability.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Augusta University and United Way of the CSRA is significant as it addresses both educational and community needs. For students, it offers a valuable opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, enhancing their employability and professional skills. For the community, the program provides essential tax services, helping families maximize their refunds and avoid costly errors. This initiative also highlights the importance of experiential learning in higher education, demonstrating how academic institutions can play a vital role in community service. By bridging the gap between education and practical application, the program supports the development of competent professionals while meeting local needs.
