A recent study by researchers from UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis highlights the growing threat of wildfires to U.S. historic landmarks. The study, published in Nature Scientific Reports, is the first national-scale
assessment of wildfire risk to American cultural heritage. It examined 100,117 sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places and found that more than half are exposed to wildfire risk, with 3,446 sites facing severe exposure. The risk is most concentrated in the western United States, with additional hotspots in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and parts of the southeastern coastline. The study emphasizes that the cultural value of these sites is tied to their original physical form, making any loss potentially irrecoverable.
