What's Happening?
A recent siting feasibility study in Nebraska has identified Sutherland, Beatrice, Brownville, and Norfolk as the most suitable locations for future small modular reactor (SMR) facilities. This study, funded by a $1 million allocation from the Nebraska Legislature
to the state’s Department of Economic Development, was led by 1898 & Co., a part of Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company. The evaluation was conducted at the request of the Nebraska Public Power District and the state. The study involved two phases, initially identifying 16 communities before narrowing the list down to the final four. The technical evaluations in the second phase were based on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s criteria for siting a nuclear power plant facility. Tom Kent, President and CEO of Nebraska Public Power District, noted positive public engagement during the study, highlighting the potential benefits of nuclear power to local communities and customers.
