What's Happening?
NATO is conducting Bold Machina (BOMA) 26, a unique experimentation program designed to test and evaluate cutting-edge technologies for maritime Special Operations Forces (SOF) in an operational environment. Held at a naval base in Lisbon, Portugal, the
program brings together the maritime SOF community and industry partners to assess new and emerging capabilities. These include uncrewed and crewed systems, advanced underwater communications, and counter-drone technologies. Companies like Kraken Technology Group are showcasing high-performance uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) such as the K3 Scout, capable of high speeds and modular mission payloads for autonomous operations. Stark Defence is demonstrating its STARK USV, a six-meter vessel with loitering ammunition payloads for striking targets up to 80 km away, also usable for ISR missions and dive operations. Other innovations include wireless charging and data transfer technology from Unplugged, and bioluminescent emergency and stealth lighting from Luxbio, which uses natural proteins for zero-heat, zero-noise illumination. Many of these companies have received support from NATO DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) and the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF).
