What's Happening?
Columbia College has replaced its previous career platform, Handshake, with a new system called ColumWorks. This change aims to better serve students pursuing creative careers by offering more tailored job search functionalities. ColumWorks, powered by the
career services company 12twenty, will now be the college's hub for on-campus jobs, internships, and creative career opportunities. The platform also facilitates Career Center appointments, internship registration, and career events. According to Anna Ogier-Bloomer, associate dean of Career Development and Industry Relations, the switch was made to address limitations in Handshake, which was criticized for offering ill-fitting job opportunities. ColumWorks provides advanced search options, allowing students to filter between various types of employment and opportunities, including freelance and volunteer work. Despite the transition, some students, like senior Amy Hernandez, have expressed skepticism about the necessity of the change, noting that many job postings remain the same.
Why It's Important?
The transition to ColumWorks is significant as it reflects Columbia College's commitment to enhancing career services for its students, particularly those in creative fields. By adopting a platform that offers more customization and relevant job opportunities, the college aims to improve the job search experience and outcomes for its students. This change could potentially lead to better job placements and career satisfaction among graduates, thereby enhancing the college's reputation and attractiveness to prospective students. Additionally, the move underscores the importance of aligning career services with the specific needs of the student body, which can be a critical factor in student success and institutional competitiveness.
What's Next?
As the new system is still in its early stages, Columbia College encourages students to provide feedback to the Career Center to address any issues with ColumWorks. The college will likely monitor the platform's performance and student satisfaction closely to ensure it meets the intended goals. Future updates or modifications to ColumWorks may be implemented based on user feedback and evolving career service needs. The college's ongoing engagement with students and alumni will be crucial in refining the platform and maximizing its benefits.
