Chaney previously served as Tennessee's offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2012 under Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley, and again from 2019 to 2020 under Jeremy Pruitt. His extensive coaching career spans 40 years, including roles as offensive coordinator at various institutions such as Cal State-Fullerton, Purdue, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, and Georgia. Chaney spent the 2024 season as the offensive coordinator for Georgia State. Despite being under contract with Tennessee through the 2021 season, Chaney was not retained by Heupel, who was hired in January 2021 following Jeremy Pruitt's dismissal amid recruiting violations. Chaney's severance from Tennessee was reduced by his salary from subsequent positions, including with the New Orleans Saints and Georgia Tech.
