Scientists have conducted a study to determine the key ingredients that make birdsong pleasant to human ears. By playing calls from 123 different wild bird species to 84 participants, researchers asked individuals to rate each call for pleasantness. The
findings indicate that people generally prefer complex, higher-pitched songs that are not excessively loud. Blackbirds' songs were rated as the most pleasant, while barn owls' songs were considered the least pleasant. The study, published in Frontiers in Bird Science, also revealed that participants' knowledge about birds did not significantly influence their perception of pleasantness, suggesting a more fundamental, perhaps innate, appreciation for certain acoustic qualities. The research team, including lead author Dr. Nadine Kalb and senior author Dr. Christoph Randler of the University of Tübingen, analyzed acoustic characteristics such as amplitude, frequency, complexity, and bandwidth to correlate them with pleasantness ratings.
