What's Happening?
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has mandated the formation of a committee to address the welfare and rights of mine workers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. This decision comes after a petition highlighted the inadequate benefits and safety measures for miners. The committee,
to be supervised by the Secretary Mines and Minerals, will review laborers' welfare, registration, and related issues. The court has directed the Chief Secretary to issue a notification for the committee's formation within seven days and has summoned detailed reports from relevant parties. The petition, filed by Umar Zeb Mashwani, President of the All K-P Labour Association, emphasized the challenges faced by mine workers, including lack of insurance and pensions. The court noted the insufficiency of current benefits and stressed the need for comprehensive protections, including insurance, pensions, and health facilities.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it addresses the long-standing issues faced by mine workers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, a region with a substantial mining industry. The court's directive aims to improve the living and working conditions of approximately 28,000 registered mine workers, who are often exposed to hazardous conditions without adequate safety measures. The decision could lead to enhanced labor rights and protections, setting a precedent for other regions with similar issues. It also highlights the need for government accountability and the implementation of effective labor laws to safeguard workers' rights.
What's Next?
The committee is expected to collaborate with various stakeholders to devise a strategy for improving miners' welfare. The court has instructed the Mines and Minerals Department to conduct field visits and ensure mine owners provide necessary worker data for registration. A detailed report is to be submitted within 60 days, outlining the proposed measures and their implementation. This initiative could lead to significant policy changes and improved safety standards in the mining sector.
