What's Happening?
NASA is set to conduct a series of low-altitude flights near Houston as part of the Student Airborne Research Program (SARP). The flights, scheduled from June 3 to June 13, will involve five research aircraft operating out of Ellington Field. These aircraft will carry
remote sensing payloads to map atmospheric gases and particles, study changes in the lower atmosphere, and observe natural processes affecting land and water. The mission will include maneuvers as low as 1,000 feet above ground level, particularly by the WP-3D Orion, a hurricane hunter aircraft owned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The aircraft are equipped with advanced scientific instruments, including lidars, synthetic-aperture radar, and spectrometers, to collect data for atmospheric and environmental research.
