What's Happening?
Sterling Heights and Macomb County officials have unveiled a significant green infrastructure project within a 1.2-mile section of the Sterling Relief Drain. This extensive project, located from west of Ryan
Road to Mound Road, involves the "daylighting" or retrofitting of the drain. Key features include reconstructed manholes and modified inlets designed to prevent trash from entering the enclosed drain and to direct stormwater runoff into an open channel. This open channel allows the stormwater to filter through newly planted native vegetation. The project encompasses 42 acres of restored habitat, with the planting of 2,800 trees and shrubs, 2,500 native perennials and pollinator plugs, and over 200 pounds of native and pollinator seeds. Additionally, a new 3,000-linear-foot shared-use pedestrian path has been created, connecting Nelson Park to Ryan Road. The $1 million reconstruction is a collaborative effort funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Macomb County Public Works Office, the City of Sterling Heights, the Sterling Relief Drain drainage board, and grant support from DTE and Consumers Energy.
