What's Happening?
Virginia Beach will honor military personnel on November 11 with its annual Tidewater Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at 16th Street and Atlantic Avenue, proceeding to the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, located
across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center at 1000 19th St. The formal ceremony will immediately follow the parade at the memorial. This event, designated as a regional event by the Veterans Administration, will feature a flyover by the Military Aviation Museum and participation from military units representing all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, including veterans from various conflicts. Numerous Tidewater municipal and veterans support organizations, along with local high school bands and Scout groups, will also take part. The event is free and open to the public.
Why It's Important?
This annual event holds significant importance for the U.S. military community and the broader public, particularly in the Hampton Roads region, which has a substantial military presence. It serves as a crucial opportunity to publicly acknowledge and express gratitude for the sacrifices and service of American veterans. By bringing together active-duty personnel, veterans from different eras, and community organizations, the parade and ceremony foster a sense of unity and national pride. For veterans, it provides a platform for recognition and camaraderie, reinforcing their value to the nation. The event also educates younger generations about the importance of military service and the history of the U.S. Armed Forces, ensuring that the legacy of veterans is remembered and respected.
What's Next?
Following the formal ceremony, a luncheon will be held for veterans at the Double Tree Hotel near the convention center, with tickets available for purchase. The event is presented by the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations and co-sponsored by American Gold Star Mothers Inc. Individuals and organizations are also encouraged to dedicate memorial paver stones in the William L. 'Billy' Myers Sr. Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, to honor those who have served. Proceeds from these paver sales benefit the Virginia Beach Mayor’s Committee for Veterans. Names of newly added veterans are read during both the annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, ensuring ongoing recognition.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate recognition, the Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony in Virginia Beach underscore the enduring commitment of American communities to their service members. The inclusion of various veteran groups, from World War II to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, highlights the continuous thread of military service across generations and the diverse experiences of those who have served. The memorial paver program offers a tangible and lasting way for the public to contribute to the remembrance of veterans, fostering a deeper connection between civilians and the military. This event also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for support services for veterans, addressing issues such as healthcare, employment, and reintegration into civilian life, which remain critical national priorities.
