What's Happening?
The United States is actively working to rebuild its domestic semiconductor production capacity to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce geographic concentration risks. However, this expansion is constrained by the need for a steady pipeline of skilled
workers with specialized expertise for fabrication facilities (fabs). A review of U.S. job postings from January 2023 to April 2025 revealed 3,441 semiconductor manufacturing job openings, concentrated among a few large employers but distributed across 48 states and the District of Columbia. The most common roles are engineering and technician positions, requiring a mix of industry-specific technical skills and transferable soft skills. The report recommends tailoring workforce training to these specific skill demands, recruiting skilled immigrants and underrepresented talent, and investing in industry clusters for long-term growth.
